History of Cupples House:

The Cupples House, a St. Louis landmark, built forSamuel H. Cupples, was completed in 1888 after 2 years of work. It was designedby Thomas B Annan and built in the Romanesque Revival style. Coloradosandstone, used to build the structure, was crafted by workers brought in from England to do the carvings and woodwork. The 42 room home was built at a cost of $500,000. Today that cost would be $15 million. It was elaborately furnished usingstained glass windows designed by Louis Comfort Tiffany. One window featured apoem by Eugene Field.

The mansion was sold in 1919 by Cupples' heirs to the Orderof Railroad Telegraphers. In the1940s this historic St. Louis home waspurchased by St. Louis University for office space and a student union. It wascalled Chouteau House. . In the 1970s The Samuel H. Cupples House wasrestored and is now a museum and reception space.
