History of Smithsonian Castle:

The Smithsonian Institution “Castle” is the oldest and most recognizable of the Smithsonian Institution buildings. Its red color, irregular shape with many turrets, spires, parapets, and towers is unique. The Gothic Revival structure was designed by architect James Renwick. It houses the Smithsonian Visitor’s Information Center and the tomb of James Smithson, the Institutions benefactor.
