History of The White House:

The White House at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. has been the official residence of the President of the United States since 1800. It was designed by Irish-American architect James Hoban. The neoclassical structure burned in 1814 and was reconstructed 1815-17 when the semi circular South Portico was added when the North Portico was completed. The East Gallery and the Executive Office wing were added when the White House was remodeled in 1902. Each First Lady, since 1961, has continued to refurbish the interior making it a museum of decorative arts. It is the only presidential residence in the world to be open to the public.
