History of Francis Field and Gymnasium:

Palace of Physical Culture was the home of a series of lectures concerning physical health, exercise, and sports science. The 1904 Olympic Games were added as part of the Fair and included many events including swimming, football, high jump, track and field events, and a marathon race. After the Fair, the stadium and gym were given to Washington University and the track and concrete grandstand were named Francis Field after the Fair’s President, David R. Francis.

The 1904 World’s Fair leased land and buildings from nearby Washington University. These served as administrative and special exhibition space. The Vatican treasures and Victoria’s Jubilee Gifts were displayed there.
