History of Scott Joplin House:

The Scott Joplin House is a modest two-story brickfour-plex or flat. It is located in the Mill Creek Valley area, known then forthe cafes and clubs where Joplin often performed. The building shows onlymodest touches of the Italianate style. Scott Jopin moved to the home in 1902where he composted “The Entertainer” and “Elite Syncopations”, two of his mostfamous pieces. Despite the designation as a national historic landmark in 1976the home was almost destroyed. In 1983 Jeff-Vander-Lou Inc., the neighborhooddevelopment association that had prevented the destruction, turned the homeover to the state of Missouri. Today the house is one of St Louis’s landmarksand a museum dedicated to Scott Joplin’s life and music.
