History of Oakland House:

Built in 1850 by Louis A. Benoist, a pioneer banker, the Oakland House is one of the treasured St. Louis Historic Homes. The mansion wasdesigned by George I Barnett, who also designed mansions in Lafayette Square aswell as Henry Shaw’s Tower Grove House. The Mansion was built of limestonequarried on the 485 acre estate. Special features of the Oakland House are theintricately carved Corinthian columns, the 14’ ceilings and the 4 story watchtower. The estate was planned as a gentleman’s working farm with landscapedgardens and a four acre lake. Barns, a smokehouse and servants houses werepart of the estate. The Oakland House is owned by the Affton HistoricalSociety. It is open for tours and is rented for private parties and communityevents. .
