History of Eugene Field House:

The Eugene Field House was built in 1845 as one of 12Federal Style row houses. The home was rented to Roswell Field and was thebirthplace and boyhood home of his son Eugene. Eugene was a well known authorof children’s literature. In 1902 Mark Twain helped attach a plaque to thehouse to commemorate Field’s work. Because of Field’s popularity, the housewas saved the demolition of the other 11 houses and has been maintained as amuseum since 1936. It houses the poet’s possessions and a collection of toys.It is known as the Eugene Field House and St. Louis Toy Museum.
