History of Campbell House:

The Campbell House, built in 1851 was thefirst of the homes built on Lucas Place, the city's first private place. It wasoriginally a typical 3 story townhouse design. The house reflects differentarchitectural styles. The front entryway was built in the Greek-Revival Stylewhile the cast iron balcony on the front of the house has Gothic detail.

Robert and Virginia Campbell became the 3rdowners of the house in 1854. The Campbells extensively remodeled and added onto the home. They purchased an adjacent lot using the additional area for ayard and carriage house. The home remained in the family until 1938 whenHazlett Campbell their son died. The furnishings were found to be a uniquedisplay of the middle Victorian period. Most of the furnishings were purchasedfrom the heirs by the William Clark Society at auction. The home was purchasedby Stix, Baer and Fuller a local department store in 1942 and presented to thepeople of St. Louis through the Campbell House Foundation.

The landmark home is now The Campbell House Museum and isthe only home remaining from Lucas Place. The street was renamed Locust Street in about 1900.
