History of Civil Courts:

The Civil Courts Building has one of the most architecturally interesting exteriors of the historical buildings in Saint Louis. It is a tall structure with a step pyramid on top. Klipsten & Rathmann were the architects who designed this Greco-Egypto-Assyro-Babylonian landmark in 1930. It is located at 10 North Tucker Blvd.

Although no one knows exactly what King Mausolus' tomb in Halicarnassus, Egypt looked like, it is believed that it was tall with a pyramid on top. This served as the inspiration for the Civil Courts Building.

On top of the pyramid are two, twelve feet high griffins made of aluminum. They have human faces, unlike mythological griffins, that symbolize human mercy tempering justice.

The area below the pyramid houses an attractive space for a law library with tall ceilings, airiness, lots of light, and good proportions.
